
The image of science and religion as permanent enemies is powerful but incomplete. Some scientists are atheists who regard belief in God as unsupported by evidence. Others are Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, or members of other traditions who see scientific research as compatible with faith. Still others describe themselves as agnostic, spiritual but not religious, culturally religious, or uncertain. Asking whether scientists believe in God therefore does not produce one universal answer. Beliefs vary by country, upbringing, scientific community, and even by what a person means by “God.”
Surveys show that scientists are generally less religious than the populations around them, particularly in the United States and Western Europe. That difference does not mean science has proved atheism, however, or that all scientists draw the same philosophical conclusions from their work. Science is a method for investigating the observable world. A scientist’s judgment about God usually includes personal, cultural, and philosophical reasoning that reaches beyond laboratory practice.
Scientists Do Not Share One Religious Position
A major American survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2009 among members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science found that 33 percent believed in God, another 18 percent believed in a universal spirit or higher power, and 41 percent believed in neither. Nearly half reported no religious affiliation. Scientists were therefore much less religious than the American public, but they were not uniformly atheistic. Pew also cautioned that AAAS members might not represent every working scientist in the United States.
Earlier research produced a similarly mixed picture. Psychologist James Leuba surveyed American scientists in 1914 and found that 42 percent believed in a personal God. When Edward Larson and Larry Witham repeated his questions in 1996, about 40 percent expressed belief and 45 percent did not. Their later survey of National Academy of Sciences members reported much lower belief among this unusually elite group. Yet critics such as Eugenie Scott argued that the inherited questions used a narrow and complicated definition of God, making the famous results less definitive than they often appear.
Country and Culture Matter
Religious belief among scientists varies dramatically across national settings. Elaine Howard Ecklund and her colleagues surveyed 9,422 biologists and physicists in France, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Scientists were usually more secular than their surrounding populations, yet more than half identified as at least slightly religious in India, Italy, Taiwan, and Turkey. Only 16 percent of French scientists described themselves as religious to any degree, compared with 30 percent in the United States.
Nearly 10 percent of scientists in the United States and United Kingdom said they had no doubt that God exists, compared with about one-quarter in India and roughly two-thirds in Turkey. These differences make it difficult to claim that scientific training produces one inevitable religious outcome. Science may influence belief, but it operates alongside national culture, family history, religious institutions, and personal experience. The word “religious” itself can carry very different meanings across societies.
Science Uses Natural Explanations
Modern science searches for explanations that can be observed, measured, tested, and corrected. A biologist studying disease does not normally appeal to divine intervention as a scientific mechanism because such an explanation cannot be isolated and tested like a virus, gene, environmental exposure, or cellular pathway. This practice is commonly called methodological naturalism. It requires scientists to seek natural explanations while doing science, but it does not require the philosophical belief that nature is all that exists.
A religious scientist may believe that God created or sustains the universe while accepting that scientific explanations must be tested against evidence. An atheist may interpret the success of natural explanations as a reason to reject supernatural claims. Both can use the same experimental methods. The National Academies explains that scientific conclusions such as evolution are accepted because they have survived extensive testing and are supported by converging evidence, not because scientists hold them as articles of faith.
Why Some Scientists Reject Belief
For some researchers, scientific habits of thought undermine religion. Science encourages people to demand evidence, prefer explanations that generate testable predictions, and revise conclusions when observations change. Miracles, revelation, and divine action may appear inaccessible to these standards. Evolution also replaced direct supernatural design with a natural mechanism capable of explaining biological complexity. In The God Delusion, evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins argues that God should be treated as a claim about reality and evaluated critically rather than protected from evidential scrutiny.
Other scientists reject belief because of the problem of evil, the diversity of incompatible religions, or the apparent hiddenness of God. Their atheism may be influenced by science, but it is not a laboratory finding in the narrow sense. No experiment simply places “God” in one column and “no God” in another. Scientific knowledge instead contributes to a broader philosophical conclusion: natural processes appear sufficient to explain phenomena once attributed to divine action, leaving no obvious need for a supernatural explanation.
Why Other Scientists See Compatibility
Religious scientists often argue that science explains natural mechanisms while religion addresses ultimate meaning, moral obligation, and why anything exists. Geneticist Francis Collins developed this position in The Language of God, defending both evolutionary biology and Christian faith. In this view, scripture is not a substitute for genetics, and genetic explanation does not automatically refute every theological claim. Natural laws may describe how the universe develops without settling why an orderly universe exists. Ecklund’s international research found that most surveyed scientists did not regard science and religion as inherently opposed, often viewing them as operating in different spheres.
Paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould proposed a more sharply separated arrangement in Rocks of Ages. His principle of “nonoverlapping magisteria” assigned science authority over empirical facts and religion authority over moral meaning and value. Ian Barbour’s When Science Meets Religion described four possible relationships between the fields: conflict, independence, dialogue, and integration. These approaches disagree with one another, but all challenge the assumption that accepting modern science necessarily requires rejecting every form of religious belief.
Belief Depends on What “God” Means
Surveys can obscure as much as they reveal because “God” does not mean the same thing to everyone. A personal God who answers prayer, performs miracles, and judges human conduct differs from a deistic creator who establishes natural laws but does not intervene. A universal spirit differs from the God described in traditional Christianity, Islam, or Judaism. Some scientists use religious language metaphorically, while others hold conventional theological commitments.
Labels such as believer, atheist, agnostic, religious, and spiritual can therefore conceal very different positions. Survey results depend heavily on how questions define God and whether they ask about belief, affiliation, practice, spirituality, or certainty. A scientist who rejects a personal deity may still believe in a higher power, while someone affiliated with a religion may privately doubt its supernatural teachings. The controversy surrounding the National Academy survey illustrates how dramatically wording can influence what researchers appear to discover.
Can Science Answer the God Question?
Scientific evidence can challenge religious claims that make specific predictions about the natural world. A chronology contradicted by geology or a biological claim contradicted by genetics enters the domain of empirical testing. Science can also investigate prayer, religious experiences, neurological states, and the social effects of religious institutions. It cannot test every possible conception of God, especially one defined as existing outside measurable nature.
This limitation does not make all theological claims equally persuasive. It means that part of the debate belongs to philosophy. Arguments about first causes, fine-tuning, consciousness, morality, evil, and divine hiddenness require logical analysis as well as scientific information. A scientist may possess exceptional expertise in biology or cosmology without equivalent expertise in theology or philosophy of religion. Scientific authority in one field does not automatically settle every metaphysical question.
The Answer Is Both Yes and No
Some scientists believe firmly in God, some believe in an impersonal higher power, some are atheists, and others remain uncertain. Scientists as a group are more secular than many general populations, but cross-national research reveals substantial diversity. Ecklund’s study also found that no more than about one-fifth of scientists in any surveyed region said science had made them much less religious, suggesting that scientific careers do not affect everyone’s faith in the same way.
The better question is not simply whether scientists believe in God, but which scientists, in which cultures, using which definition of God, and for what reasons. Science influences belief by encouraging evidence-based explanation and providing natural accounts of the universe. It does not mechanically produce atheism, just as religious identity does not prevent scientific competence. Scientists are not only practitioners of a method; they are people interpreting what that method means within larger visions of reality.
