Sacks shares the fear of dehumanization but notices the opposite danger as well: abandoning vulnerable people in the name of freedom without supplying meaningful housing, relationships, structure, or long-term care. More recent neuroscience reviews suggest that exposure to natural environments is associated with changes in stress-related and self-referential brain activity and with patterns consistent with attentional restoration, though researchers emphasize that mechanisms remain incompletely understood and many studies are correlational or heterogeneous. Sacks reached the insight clinically rather than experimentally: people are organisms, and organisms may function differently in environments containing vegetation, open space, sensory variation, rhythm, and living complexity than they do under fluorescent lights in institutional rooms.

Libraries, Books, and the Need for Sustained Attention

Sacks’s attachment to libraries belongs to the same philosophy of environment. He valued physical libraries not merely because they contained information but because they supported a particular style of attention. Books could be browsed, encountered accidentally, cross-referenced, marked, returned to, and remembered partly through their physical locations. Knowledge was embedded in places. The young Sacks wandering through museums and libraries experienced learning spatially as well as intellectually: particular shelves, specimens, stairways, and reading rooms became landmarks in the geography of his mind.

This makes his later essay “The Machine Stops” feel like the dark counterpart of “Libraries.” Borrowing its title from E. M. Forster’s astonishingly prescient 1909 story The Machine Stops, Sacks worries that smartphones, social media, and continuous electronic communication are replacing solitude, direct observation, sustained reading, and face-to-face attention with perpetual interruption. He explicitly distinguishes having access to enormous quantities of information from possessing knowledge or understanding. His argument is deliberately polemical, and modern digital life is more complicated than his critique sometimes allows. Yet his deeper concern is psychologically sophisticated: attention is finite, and whatever repeatedly captures it becomes part of the architecture of a life. Information abundance can therefore coexist with intellectual impoverishment if the conditions for concentration disappear.

Technology, Forster, and the Fear of Losing the Immediate World

Sacks saw E. M. Forster’s The Machine Stops as eerily prophetic. Forster imagined humans living in isolation, communicating through technological systems, receiving lectures remotely, and increasingly treating direct contact with the physical world as unnecessary. Sacks recognized an uncomfortable resemblance to a society in which people could walk through streets while barely perceiving their surroundings because attention had migrated into screens. The fear was not that technology is inherently evil; Sacks depended on sophisticated medicine, communications, recording devices, and scientific instrumentation. His concern was what happens when a tool stops serving attention and begins colonizing it.

This argument connects back to nearly every earlier essay in the book. Swimming requires immersion in water. Chemistry requires contact with substances. Botany requires looking at plants. Medicine requires attending to a patient. Libraries require wandering among books. Friendship requires noticing another person. The good life in Sacks’ work is therefore strikingly embodied and first-hand. Sacks believes human beings need meaningful work, curiosity, physical movement, books, nature, friendship, scientific understanding, compassionate medicine, solitude, and opportunities to pay sustained attention. He does not offer these as a self-help formula. They emerge indirectly from the kinds of lives he repeatedly admired and from the environments in which people seemed to become most fully themselves. The book’s title therefore acquires a richer meaning. To put “everything in its place” is not to make life perfectly tidy.
